GSoC 2023

Google Summer of Code is a unique program where students or new contributors to open source, ages 18 and over, are paired with a mentor to introduce them to the open source community and provide guidance while they work on a real-world open source project over the summer. Projects cover a wide range of fields including Cloud, Operating Systems, Graphics, Medicine, Programming Languages, Robotics, Science, Security, and many more. GSoC Contributors do earn a stipend to work on their medium (~175 hours) or large (~350 hours) projects. This is not an internship but provides an invaluable experience to put your skills to use on a real-world software project and allows you to be part of an amazing community!

FOSS Hack 3.0

FOSS Hack 3.0, is the third edition of FOSS Hack, a hybrid hackathon to promote Free and Open Source Software by bringing together students and professionals to build or extend FOSS projects. Here you can win up to ₹10 lakhs in cash and receive grants for your FOSS project.

Intro

If you are a student or beginner looking to make your first contribution to open source, Google Summer of Code is one of the best opportunities.

You are paired with a mentor and get introduced to the open-source community, the mentors provide guidance while working on a real-world open-source project over the summer. Projects cover a wide range of fields including Cloud, Operating Systems, Graphics, Medicine, Programming Languages, Robotics, Science, Security, and many more. GSoC Contributors do earn a stipend to work on their medium (~175 hours) or large (~350 hours) projects. This is not an internship but provides an invaluable experience to put your skills to use on a real-world software project and allows you to be part of an amazing community!

GSoC is a highly competitive program, interested GSoC Contributors should research organizations that participated previously and reach out to the organizations that interest them as early in the year as possible.

Why contribute to new GSOC'23 organizations?

New GSoC organizations are Open Source organizations that have not taken part in GSoC in previous years. These projects/organizations will generally have a niche set of contributors.

These organizations will have low competition as compared to organizations that have participated in GSoC regularly in the past years.

If you are keen on getting into GSoC consider making your first PR on one of these organizations.

Regardless of whether the organization is first-time or not, take a look at their field and tech stack to see if it interests you and if you will be able to contribute.
